rural_urban_continuum_codes

Get ERS Rural-Urban Continuum Codes - a county-level lookup classifying U.S. counties by metro/nonmetro status and degree of urbanization, published in vintages from 1974 to 2023.

vintage: str | None
Default: 2023

Description

Classification vintage to retrieve. Each vintage is a separate county lookup published in that year, carrying the RUCC code, its vintage-specific description, and the county population; codes and descriptions are vintage-specific because the urbanization thresholds changed over time. Valid vintages are:
2023, 2013, 2003

state: str | None
Two-letter state or territory code to scope the county rows to a single state. If None, returns every county of the vintage. The available states vary by vintage: the 2023 and 2013 vintages include the AS, GU, MP, VI, PR, and DC territories, and the 2003 vintage adds PR to the fifty states and DC.

rucc_code: str | None
Rural-Urban Continuum Code for the vintage: 1 to 3 for metro counties and 4 to 9 for nonmetro counties.

description: str | None
Vintage-specific description of the RUCC code, carried per row from the source.

population: int | None
Published county population for the vintage's reference census, as a full count.
