How is ODP V5 licensed?
Every file in the OpenBB repository, and every package published from it for V5, is licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0. That includes openbb-core, the provider and extension packages, openbb-platform-api, openbb-mcp-server, openbb-cli, and ODP Desktop. The full text is in the LICENSE file of the repository, and the text of the license governs where it differs from this summary.
What changed from V4?
V4 and earlier releases were licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0-only). V5 changes the license to Apache-2.0 (OpenBB-finance/OpenBB#7677). Releases made under the AGPL keep that license; the V4 licensing FAQ remains in the V4 documentation.
The REST API reports the new license as well: the default license_name in the OpenAPI document served by openbb-core is Apache-2.0.
Can I use ODP in a commercial or proprietary product?
Yes. Apache-2.0 permits use, modification, and redistribution, including in closed-source products and hosted services, without a separate commercial license and without publishing your changes. When you redistribute ODP or a modified version of it, include a copy of the license, keep the existing copyright, patent, trademark, and attribution notices, mark the files you changed, and carry over the contents of any NOTICE file. The license also grants a patent license from each contributor and does not grant rights to the OpenBB trademarks.
Do my extensions have to use the same license?
No. An extension that registers through the ODP entry points is your own package and can use any license, including a proprietary one. The same applies to FastAPI apps served with openbb-api and to projects generated with openbb --generate-extension.
Does the license cover the data returned by providers?
No. The license covers the software. Provider packages connect to public or third-party services, and the data they return is subject to each source's own terms of use, which may restrict storage, redistribution, or commercial use. Check those terms before redistributing data.
